Solar-air-conditioning systems for small and medium applications in residential and commercial buildings
Organisers: EVE, Target Gmbh
Location: EACI Agency - Madou Tower, Brussels
Description:
Objective:
The objective of the workshop is to promote small and medium-sized cooling systems powered by solar thermal energy for installations in the commercial and residential sectors. Significant advances have been made in recent years in the field of solar thermal facilities for producing DHW and heating. However, the drawback of these systems is that they produce a surplus of energy during summer months. The option of producing cooling during the summer season significantly raises the overall efficiency of the facilities, since it uses energy that would otherwise be dispersed. The partners in the SOLAIR project are therefore working towards resolving some of the main market obstacles such as limited knowledge, publicising the potential of the technology and future prospects, as well as technological and financial barriers.
Target Groups:
The workshop is intended to be a forum for encouraging an exchange of views and discussion on issues related to solar thermal energy for cold production and to contribute to disseminating the knowledge generated within the SOLAIR project in particular and the industry in general amongst a public that does not specialise in this type of technology but has a very important role in the future development of the market, such as regulatory and political decision-makers at European, national and regional levels, potential investors and promoters and representatives of the industries associated with development of this technology.
14:15 – 17:30
STEER and MARCO POLO: funding opportunities for your sustainable transport projects
Organiser: EACI
Location: European Commission - Charlemagne Building
Description:
Sustainable transport projects can substantially contribute to achieve local abd regional energy targets. Transport, indeed, counts for roughly 30% of the energy consumption in Europe. This conference aims at providing practical information about STEER and MARCO POLO, two European funding schemes targeting respectively energy efficiency in transport and freight modal shift and traffic avoidance. The format of the conference will offer the participants the opportunity to learn about these two funding tools, to get answers to their practical questions and to hear the concrete experience of local transport stakeholders who benefited from them.

Environmental Research for SMEs - Technology Challenges and Market Opportunities in Sustainable Energy Production and Consumption
Organiser: European Commission -DG RTD, Unit T4 (SME)
Location: European Commission - Charlemagne Building
Description:
SMEs are at the core of European industry and increasingly they have to respond to a strong competition in the internal market and globally. The EC Commissioner Potocnik describes SMEs as the DNA of the European economy while underlining the role of SMEs in achieving the Lisbon agenda. In order to further support the competitiveness of European SMEs, there is a need to increase SMEs' knowledge base and their research efforts in transnational cooperation. Actions at EU level are necessary to complement and enhance the impact of actions taken at national and regional level. The particular SME programme under the Research Framework Programme 7 (FP7) is a bottom-up scheme (open to all kinds of S&T) and it aims to link research to commercial success. It supports research projects where SMEs or SME associations have identified a need for innovation but where their internal capacity does not allow them to carry out the necessary research. In this programme, they instead outsource the bulk of the research and technological development to research institutions of their choice.Energy policy plays a central role in the European Union's efforts to address the Lisbon agenda, to achieve the Kyoto Protocol target for 2008-2012 and to guarantee energy security for the citizens. Within this framework, energy supply, environmental sustainability and competitiveness are key to EU energy policy. In the EU-25, renewable energy corresponds to 6.0% of the total energy consumption and EU indicative target for renewable energies by 2010 is 12%. Worldwide in 2007, more than €50 billion was invested in new renewable energy power and heating capacity. Many new companies entered in the renewable energy industry, and some companies broadened expansion into emerging markets. Worldwide there has been an increase to 2.4 million in jobs related to renewable energies in 2006. In parallel to these developments, in this SME programme a growing number of projects are conducted in the area of sustainable energy production and consumption. In the sustainable energy workshop, a number of successful ongoing projects as well as projects just having started will be presented by their coordinators. There will be ample opportunities for questions and discussions, focusing on the challenges and market opportunities for SMEs in this growing market.
14:30 – 18:30
ManagEnergy Annual Conference 2009: New Opportunities for Local Energy Actors
